The 8 Beatitudes

The Beatitudes are the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-10). Jesus teaches us that if we live according to the Beatitudes, we will live a happy Christian life. The Beatitudes fulfill God’s promises made to Abraham and his descendants and describe the rewards that will be ours as loyal followers of Christ.

The word "blessed" (in Greek makarioi) alsomeans "happy".

  1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  2. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
  3. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
  4. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
  5. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
  6. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
  7. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
  8. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me.

The beatitutes is the roadmap Jesus given to us to help us find the true happiness in this world and in eternal life. Jesus gave us the roadmap to real happiness known as the Beatitudes We all want to be happy, don't we? God desires that we all be happy. Jesus tells us that true happiness does not come from material possessions. True happiness is found in God, as well as in how we treat others and how we act. God values good behavior and blesses us when we do so. Jesus taught that if we live our lives according to the Beatitudes (from the Latin word "beatitudo," meaning happiness), we will live a happy Christian life. God's promises to Abraham and his descendants are fulfilled in the Beatitudes, which explain the blessings we will receive as faithful followers of Christ. If we follow these beatitudes we will have many rewards in heaven. Good behavior is important to God, and he blesses us when we behave well. Jesus t Jesus taught these Beatitudes as the foundations for living a life of real Christian discipleship and achieving ultimate happiness.
